European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
