Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.
This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His son, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of his "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, leading him to enact a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, Brasília.
The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
